Chapter 37 - Whose side are you on?

Derick stepped forward without a glimpse of fear, held up his chain and swung a couple of times and a great number of these monsters were wiped out.

Although his whip killed a great number, there were still some who escaped his radius and was running towards the camp.

On seeing this, Xender quickly yelled, "Attack!"

As soon as her word was blurted out, her troops began to fire.

I stood there watching as our troops gain victory, with a huge help from Derick, who had wiped out all zombies within a 20 feet diameter.

He turned to the zombies which were approaching the camp, and swung his sword to their direction.

"Look out!", some troop members yelled as they jumped on the floor.

The chain mercilessly flew passed their heads and collided against the zombies attacking them, and unfortunately on a troop member who didn't get out of its way in time.

Both the troop member and the zombies which contact with the chain, got split into two uneven parts.

"Robby!", One of the troop members cried out.

The camp was stunned.

Derick had killed one of their own, and his face remained without an expression.

He turned to the rest zombies and continued killing them like nothing had happened.

I knew Derick wasn't himself, but I didn't know he was this far gone.

In no time the zombies in his front were cleared out. It was almost dawn, and the sun had began to show signs of setting.

The entire camp was exhausted, they had been up all through the night, and had suffered one loss after all the great battles they had witnessed. The unfortunate thing about this loss was that it was caused by our very own Derick, but none dared confront him.

"Sub commander Xender, do you think it's time we head back to the fort now, we are all tired and hungry, if we stay any longer, we would either die or be killed.", someone complained.

Looking at their faces, they all had this in their mind.

But I greatly feared taking Derick back to the camp.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have much of a choice, Helen had marched forward and was obviously about to speak.

Even though, I may appear more dominant than her. Once she speaks their mind, they are definitely going to follow.

Just as expected she began to speak: "Let's head home to celeberate our victory. And not a word about Robby's death should be spoken to my father! We all make mistakes. Besides, only one was killed in this great battle, without Derick, we all know how much we would have lost."

They murmured for a while and slowly kept quiet.

"Is that understood!", Helen said aloud.

"Yes sub commander!", they chorused, and the journey began.

With the entire chain wrapped around his arm, Derick followed quietly.

April went around him from time to time, trying to squeeze a conversation out of him, but worse than before was he, cold as the north pole, unshaken like a mountain.

Medusa also followed close behind, looking at Derick like someone she knew, but couldn't seem to remember their relationship.

We walked for hours and finally arrived at the fort whose bridge was still partially destroyed.

The sun was out and the settlers could see us coming from a distance, they made great noise as we got closer.

++++

By the time we arrived, the commander was now in front of the bridge.

"Xender and Helen, you dare defile me!", he said aloud.

Silence kicked in immediately his voice fell.

Abruptly from amongst the troops, a voice was heard, "Commander!", A troop member said and stepped forward.

We were all stunned to see this brave lad, what on earth could he possibly want to say to the commander now?

The brave lad began to speak, "I and my brothers have fought for your daughters, obedient have we been to them. I plead commander that we are not punished for their sins towards you, all we did was follow orders. Allow us to come in and see our families and friends."

As soon as he was done speaking, silence ran through the crowd, even the commander himself was stunned.

"Such bravery and outspokenness. What's your name son?", The commander asked.

"Davis sir!", he replied.

"Davis, select your brothers and come in, when you have rested, come and see me", the commander who was angry a few moments ago said calmly.

The troop behind him yelled in excitement.

"They are all my brothers and sisters sir, please let us in!", Davis replied.

Davis is a sword wielder, in battle, these guys are not really recognized but today he stood up for his troop members, that took balls. I personally like what he did, if he hadn't done that, I myself would have. But I am glad he did, because the words circulating in my mouth at this moment are far from kind or respectful.

The commander allowed them to march in chanting victoriously.

Now all that was left at the other side of the bridge was: I, Helen, Derick, Medusa, and the husband and wife.

"Who are they?", the commander asked glancing at the man with his broken leg and his wife.

Judith quickly stepped forward and introduced herself: "I am Judith, and this is my husband, Mike!"

The commander stared at Mike's leg and then looked back at Judith who was talking.

"We've been looking for the fort, and we encountered this kids on the way, they saved our lives, if it hadn't been for them we probably would have been dead, please spare them!", Judith added.

"Judith, Mike, you are welcome to fort 4, you may come in and get acquainted with the fort!", the commander spoke.

"Thank you sir!", she replied and walked with her husband towards the bridge.

She suddenly stopped and turned to us and then back at the commander and then asked: "Why aren't you coming?"

"Mrs. Judith come in!", the commander repeated with a trace of harshness in his voice.

Judith's expression changed immediately.

Lines of anger became clear on the face of the young looking bio-chemist.

It was obvious that this woman had anger issues, and it will take one more word from dad to push out her true character.

"Mrs. Judith, please go in, we'll be fine", I said as calm as I could.

She took a deep breath and then assisted her husband in.

"Now to my prodigal daughters who have decided to choose a strange boy over their father.", he said with a straight face.

"It's not like that dad.... Derick saved our troop members", Helen spoke out immediately.

"Shut up!", the anger he had been concealing finally sprouted out through his mouth.

The timid Helen shook in fear.

"If it weren't for the same Derick, their lives wouldn't have been risked in the first place!", the commander said aloud.

He stood staring at Helen, he then turned to Derick who stood some distance away looking at the ground and river, as Medusa continued staring and moving around him in a strange manner.

"What is that?", he asked with a confused expression.

There was a moment of silence as I and Helen looked at him as well.

"Are you guys deaf or dumb?!", the commander asked angry.

"That's Derick!", Helen replied in fear.

"How?", the shocked commander asked, "Has he become a zombie already?", he added.

"That's what you caused!", the anger I had been trying to suppress since I saw the old fool finally escaped out of the box.

"The innocent boy died and went to hell because of you, now his soul is lost, we don't even know if he is still human", I added.

"And you guys brought him back to our fort?! Are you out of your minds?", dad said in obvious fear.

Before I could say another word, Ronald rolled in with his wheelchair.

"So it's true, you guys are back", he said.

As soon as his voice resonated, a sudden wind blew from Derick's direction.

A strong murderous aura was felt all over the area.

I quickly turned back to look at Derick.

He stood there as his chain rooled out his arms as though he was about to rest all his might on a zombie. This was the first expression I have seen him display since he came back to life, and it wasn't good at all.

"You killed Mrs. Claire! I won't spare you!", he said as he stepped forward.
