"What's that?", I asked looking at the old looking book in her hand.
"Oh this! This is called the casters welch!", She replied as she opened it.
"The what now?!", I asked confused.
She chuckled as she continued flipping through the pages of this book.
"I believe it's time you learn a thing or 2 about ghosts.", She added.
"First things first! What is a ghost?", Kareen asked looking at me.
Without letting me speak she explained: "When a person dies, they have a period of time to roam the earth. During this time they are considered ghosts!"
"What do you mean?", I said looking around for other ghost.
"Oh Katie, relax. Only a few can contact the physical!", Kareen further explained.
"Why is that?", I asked.
"They've come in contact with others or certain spirits which have the gateway through!", Kareen said and stopped at a page.
"Most of these ghost have a time period where they are allowed to come out. Majority of them were given the hours of the night; even the ones which mean no harm. That's why most times you wake up in the middle of the night with a feeling like someone's watching. You are not far from the truth. I have seen grandpa doing that!", She spoke.
"You've what?!", I said trying to get up, but my heavy head weighed me down once again.
"Easy now sis! He didn't do anything, he was just watching.", She explained.
"How where you able to see him?", I asked.
"Denzel and I have made quite a few deals.", she said with a shy smile.
"What deal made you see grandpa?", I asked.
"He possessed me.", she explained.
"You what?! That's possible?", I asked surprised and then began to wonder.
Could it be that all those time Kareen came around to hit my butt and run away she wasn't herself?
"Have you ever wondered why some people just appear to be so lucky?", Kareen continued.
"Hold that thought young lady! How many times have you allow Denzel to possess you?", I asked with a frown and she began to chuckle.
"You bitch!", I cursed angrily.
She just laughed some more, raised the open book to a point where I can see and said: "Do you see this?"
After a brief pause, I turned to the book and saw a necklace whose pendant was a ball and so replied: ".... Yes.... What about it."
"It's called the wolves eye.", she replied.
"There once was a breed of wolves which hunted ghosts. They were considered to be friendly vegetarians because they ate no humans. The villagers haboured them for years and during their stay, there was an outstanding peace, everyone lived in harmony thinking that the wolves brought in a spirit of peace and harmony, so they were treated well. But soon the elders of the village also realized that the graveyard which is considered their resting place felt deserted.", She explained.
"How can they find that out from a deserted graveyard? Isn't that how it's supposed to be?!", I asked.
She chuckled and asked: "Why does the graveyard feel creepy especially at night?"
After hearing her question, I remained quiet.
"An entire area clear, but the graveyard alone having mists and this weird peace; birds seemingly interacting with this mist. Sometimes appearing to be listening.", She further explained.
Hearing this, I was fully convinced. Kareen is and has always been right. I truly am impressed and a bit upset with myself for not believing earlier.
"Who evented putting flowers on tombstones? What's its implication? You ever wondered?", She asked a series of questions.
I opened my a couple of times, but really didn't know what to say.
She smiled and began to speak: "the elders noticed how normal the graveyard appeared and decided to consult a few using some methods here in this book!"
She spoke, hit the book and continued speaking: "To their surprise after several conjuring fails. They gave up thinking the book was the problem, so threw it away. But one of them found and took the book home to his sick wife whom all had concluded her death."
"As he rushed home, he looked through the book for methods to keep his wife alive. On getting home these wolves were around his house, seemingly waiting for something; he ignored them and ran into his house. On getting in, he saw her gasping for breath but decided to continue going through the book in an attempt to save her. With her last strength she held his arm", as Kareen spoke, she held my arm.
Feeling her hand my arm, I couldn't but get a little shaky as she continued: "She called his name, about to say something else when she finally gave up. Seeing this, he immediately began the conjuring process."
"The wolves which seemed friendly and sympathetic came inside the house while he conjured. When he opened his eyes, he discovered the wolves making a circle near a wall of the house. He ignored this and kept on with the process. Eventually he began to hear screams, only then did he open his eyes and realized that these wolves had began to devour his wife's ghost.", She further explained.
"He screamed and cried, shooing them away, but all to no avail. They only left when they were done with his wife.", She explained.
Hearing this, I began to shed tears as I imagined how he felt watching his wife die twice.
To be continued……
