"I didn't do much, my darling here did it all", she said stroking Mike's hair.
Mike gave off a smile and began to groan some more, "we need to get him out of here, please!", she begged.
I looked at the both of them as I analyzed the situation, it was almost night and the usual rain had began to show its face, if I leave them, they won't make it through the night, at least not the both of them. And besides I need the information.
"Find a way to get him to the cave!", I said helping Mike stand up, "Keep heading in this direction!", I said pointing at the direction of the cave I left.
"Okay!", Judith replied, "where are you going?", Mike asked, "I am going to get back my dinner!", I said and ran off.
I swung from tree to tree, trying to get back to where I earlier left the antelope. It was getting really dark, it felt like I had lost it until I heard the sound of wild dogs, as the growled and broke bones.
I swear by the body of dead Mrs Claire which they ate, I will not let anyone go!
I stood on the branch just above them, as they both ate down the antelope. How I am I going to kill both at the same time? I have to change the angle at which I go down.
I was about to jump on the next tree when my chain squeaked.
On hearing this the dogs quietly raised their heads up and looked around.
I remained there quiet, and so did they, after a few seconds they continued eating. There's no way I am going to jump to the next tree un-noticed, I have to kill them one after the other, but fast.
Without wasting anymore time, I jumped down, striking one with the chain, on collision with its neck, its head flew off. The other started running, "You are going no where!", I said as I ran, jumped and swung my chain at its leg. The chain was long and it was running away, so couldn't see it coming to even attempt to dodge.
The chain went straight to its leg, and on collision, it summersaulted mid-air and landed on its back, screenching in pain, for its legs were no more. "For your cruelty!", I said as I folded my chain in three to reduce its length, raised it up and forcefully rested it on its head, blood sprinkled around as it stopped strugling.
Unlike with the antelope, I felt nothing; just like uncle Zack and Aunt Vera it actually deserved to die.
I walked back to the antelope they had paritially devoured, "They'll make up for what you've eaten", I said to myself and tied them all up with the chain and pulled them to the cave.
After struggle full journey I got to the cave and found the couple already in, "Friend you are back!", Judith said on seeing me.
"My name's Derick", I said as I pulled everything into the cave, "Derick", she repeated seemingly thinking. "Here", I said handing her some leaves I picked along the road, "for his leg", I said. "Neam leaves, oh how thoughtful of you!", she said collecting it from my hand.
"You squeeze and apply", I instructed, "don't worry, I know how it is done", she replied as she squeezed the leaves and applied them on Mikes leg as he screenched in pain, "its okay dear, you'll be fine", she said as she touched his head.
"I'll be right back, I am going to get some wood for fire", I said as I went out to get wood.
On my way, it began to rain heavily, "f_ck!", I exclaimed p_ssed. How am I going to get dry wood now? This is hopeless, I said as I began to walk back to the cave under the heavy rain and was getting cold.
And sudenly, a sneeze sensation.
This time, the zombies were out under the rain, searching for the tree.
What's so special about this tree? Why are the zombies so interested in it, maybe the couples back in the cave can explain.
I took a deep breath and was back. Feeling strengthen, I swung my chain at a tree, and on collision, it burst open.
The wood inside it wasn't wet, and that gave me a plan. I rushed back to the cave, not wanting to waste this vision acquired strength. When I got close enough to it, I broke a tree in half, and took with me the broken half to the cave.
"Derick!", Judith and Mike exclaimed on seeing me with a tree. I said nothing and laid it down in the cave, "stay back!", I warned as I folded the chain and raised it up.
They obeyed, although confused. The chain came down hard on tree and it shattered into several pieces.
"How did you?", Judith asked amazed as I picked the wood together with the intention of starting a fire.
"Derick, were you bitten?", Judith asked and I stopped, turned and looked at her, "What do you know about that?", I asked. She was quiet as they both looked at me, "could you please start up the fire, I promise to tell you everything I know", she replied.
In a matter of minutes the fire was lit and chucks of the antelope were set to roast above it.
"Here", I said handing them each a piece of the roasted animal. "Start talking!", I said as we sat round the fire, while the rain fell out side.
"A week or two after the zombie invasion, I and my husband were trying to run out the city, when a zombie known as white alpha hijacked us. He brought us out of the car and asked what we had to offer. My husband tried to attack him but was struck down by one of his so called zombie brothers. On seeing this I pleaded for our lives to be spared. Then he asked what I did for a living, saying that he sensed great potential in me, and then I told him that I was a bio-chemist. With joy, he asked me to work for him, and he ordered my husband to be eaten up! I pleaded with him that if he is to take me he should spare my husband. He agreed and took me away", She narrated.
"Where were you taken to?", I asked anxious to know. "I was taken to their head quaters, I honestly don't know how I got there, but I certainly know what I saw when I got there. I was'nt the only that was captured, they were others of different abilites and qualification. They did as they were told to without asking question. When I saw this, I wondered how humans could be so obideint and cooperative with zombies without even trying to escape. But taken a deeper look, I realized that the humans were infact zombie converts. They understood just what they were told to do and so worked none stop", she said as she shook her head.
"I also saw how these things were made. The humans which had died were taken to a place and in this place, their brains are contaminated with zombie DNA. This gives them life and takes away their sanity, and since they were already dead, it was easier for the zombie DNA to go round. For this set, what ever they knew was lost, overwritten, and just like a baby, they are thought how perform activities from scratch. Then there was the bitten set, it turns out that these zombies had been on earth long before their invasion, they had been planning their attack, understanding the human race, white alpha happen to be in this category. When one is bitten by zombie, within it's 7th to 10th year after the bite, it becomes one of them. It finds the zombie as an ally and humans as it's enemy, it is given reasons to hate humans, its old memories exist but are altered. Its strength is increased and everything about it is enhanced", she explained as I thought about how I feel when I am bitten.
"During the first 7 years, one remains normal mentally, at least to some extent. He begins to see the floor in humans more clearly, his senses are hightened, he sees through the eyes of zombies when ever he is closest to death, for example a hard sneeze, which stops the heart from beating. When back, they get crazy strong, I know you know what I mean. The kind of strength a young man can acquire that will enable him lift a tree effortlessly", she explained.
As her husband stared at me, "Honey, this is unbelievable!", he said as he continued staring. Feeling akward cause of his stare, "what is?", I asked looking back at him eye to eye.
"My husband has never seen one before, seeing you lifting the tree is a big shocker to him", she replied.
"And finally, the conversion. Unlike the dead and bitten converts, the humans with special ability are converted in a different way. For us, we are infused with a virus, reason being that, our memories are needed intact, so we can perform the task we were captured for. after being converted, we become slow learners we find it difficult to assimilate new information, so before we are converted, we are fed with as much information as possible, when we know most of the basics and some extra, we are converted so we don't try to run away", she explained.
"But when my mom saw me, she recognized me", I said remembering how mom looked when she saw me. "Like I told you before, our memories are still intact, when we see a loved one we recognize them very well, the only problem, is the virus we are given complicates things for us. So seeing a loved one makes us confused, now believing that all humans are enemies and now seeing one we recognize, it just distabilizes us", she explained.
"Oh, so how were you freed?", I asked the question that had been bothering me, "there exists a tree....", she said. As soon as I heard the word "tree", I remembered the visions and how the zombies were so eager to take down a tree.
"What about it?", I asked, "its fruits are very tiny, but have thee ability to neutralize the virus, in that confused state. Sadly they are not so many of them", she explained.
Could that be what white alpha meant when he said, I was capable of getting mom back? For as it stands now, I am the only one still alive mom knows, and loves. Could that be what white alpha meant when he said that he couldn't bring mom back, but I could...He wasn't lying after all. But now there are about to take down all the trees that can produce the antidote for this virus.
'There shall be no take back' I remembered white alpha's words during the vision, then the couple. They were the taken back he was referring to, and that's why they wanted them so bad, because they knew too much.
"Derick", Judith called on seeing me lost in my thoughts. I looked at her, "what's wrong?", she asked, "I have to go", I said standing up, "go where?", she asked, "stop them!", I replied as I stood and walked to the front of the cave.
"From what?", she asked, "they are planning to take down the trees! And if they do my mom will be lost forever", I replied.
