Chapter 28 - Hope

The zombies ran towards me, about 10 in number.

I stood still holding the chain firmly, contemplating the action to take. If I spinned the chain around myself, above my head, even if it lands on one and it scatters in pieces these guys won't care, they'll keep attacking. Aiming one by one, is quite dangerous, cause if I should miss, I'll only inflict pain on myself.

After thinking of these things, I decided to run and have them chase me instead, but not before getting all their attention.

I looked at the one immediately in front of me, there's no way it can dodge if I swung this at him. so I did, he foolishly ran in and just like that, it divided into two parts, each shattered.

To my amazement, it died instantly, very unlike these things. I looked at the rest coming, they were quite close to one another, I picked up the chain and decided to try spinning above my head, ignoring the implications. Unlike the wild dogs they ignored the spinning chain and whipping sound it made, coming in mass and packing up dust as they did.

The dust packed brought brought the sneezing sensation, and why shouldn't I allow that, I sneezed and went into a snappy vision. This time seeing myself from different angles, with the intent to end my life.

When I opened my eyes they were just a feet away, in a second, 3 had entered the spinning chain, as it came in contact with it they burst open instantly, for my strength had been multiplied by virtue of the vision.

With that confidence, I walked closer as more approached, and as for as many that came in contact with the chain were destroyed instantly.

Those who were trying to attack the couple saw their brothers dying like flies and decided to partake in the swift exit. I continued spinning until the very last one, when it approached I decided to try a move I had been visualizing in my head, but have been too scared to try it due to their number.

Like I would a tree, I swung the chain at it with as little force as possible, so I don't end up killing it, and just as planned the chain went around it's body, so tight it couldn't move its arms. I initially wanted to send it flying in the air, but had lost all my vision acquired strength, so I quickly pulled it to myself, as soon as it got close a enough, I raised my leg up and kicked its head of its body, and then pulled my chain softly, letting loose of its headless body.

It landed on the floor, and so did the other end of the chain, while the other remained in my hand, as I watched its headless body struggle to get up, and the eyes in its head continued moving. With the chain, I flogged the head and it burst open, sprinkling blood all over the place.

The place suddenly became quiet, nothing was heard apart from the motion of the ocean's current, and the silence was broken by the sound of an applaud.

"Wow! That was amazing!", I heard a female say as I turned to the couple.

"Who are you?", I asked as they walked closer, holding sticks in their hands, seemingly had been using them to drive the zombies away.

"I am judith, and this is my husband, Mike", she replied as they came closer. "What about you?", Judith asked as I carefully watched her and her husband walk to me.

I remained quiet, "okay....If you don't want to tell me that, at least tell me where you learnt how to fight like that?", Judith asked touching the chain, "what do you guys have to do with the zombies?", I asked ignoring her question.

"Nothing! We are in search of the safe haven we heard about on the radio", she replied as she continued touching the chain, "good luck with the zombie attack then", I said pulling my chain, p_ssed at their dishonesty.

"kid!", Mike called as I walked away.

He was as old as I saw in the vision, Judith wasn't so young her self, but was quite distant from Mike in facial comparison.

"Kid!", Mike called again seemingly chasing after me, "what?!", I yelled as I turned to him. On hearing the way I reacted, he slowed down a bit, "what do you want?", I asked.

"We just want to know if you know where the safe haven is", he requested, "trust me, it's not so safe there. It's best you protect yourself the best way you can", I replied and continued walking away.

"Come on! Have you been there before?", he asked still walking after me as I continued walking away.

I stopped abruptly quite p_ssed, "you know what? Just keep following the river as you were instructed on the radio and stop disturbing me. If it helps you to know, you are in the right direction, so good luck!", I said and continued walking away, this time he did not follow.

I toss my chain at a tree and swung away, back to the cave.

In no time I was there, but couldn't help think about the couple's significance as I swung from tree to tree. Why were the zombies so interested in them? Why were they lying? What are they hiding?

These questions ran through my mind till I arrived at my destination.

"I am hungry", I said touching my rumbling tummy, but I had some fruits before going to help that couple, why the sudden hunger? And for some reason the hunger is so intensed unlike any I have experienced in my life, and I have stayed for days without eating.

Enough thinking, I am out in the forest for crying out loud, there's food everywhere, I better go find something to eat.

I looked at the chain in my hand and contemplated leaving it so I don't scare off another animal, but what do I use to catch them if I have no weapons. It seems I have no choice, I'll just be alot more careful this time.

I stood in front of the cave and tried to listen for any wild animal behaviour. I walked into the forest still in search of them, and out of nowhere, came an antelope.

I held the chain firmly trying not to make a sound, for these things have very good ears, and are crazy fast at running. I looked up at the branch, if I were to get on the branch and jump on it from above or to strike from the top, I doubt it will see me coming.

I took a peek at the grass it was eating, it doesn't seem like one who would leave it anytime soon, so I walked back slowly, cause getting on the branch from where I was will get his attention, especially with squeaking sound the chain makes everytime it moves.

I got on a tree some distance away from it, and from that tree I moved to the next, and from that, the next till I got the one directly above it, but still some distance away from the branch above it. I folded the chain strategically, so it doesn't make any noise, and then I went found my way to the branch I had targeted, all that is left now it to drop on it.

"1", I whispered, "2", I added still whispering, "3!", I counted and jumped with the chain loosing as I came down, it seemingly heard the sounded and tilted his head up, running without trying to figure out what it heard. A really timid animal.

Unfortunately for it, even though it was able to dodge my landing, it wasn't fortunate enough to dodge my chain's. As soon as the chain came in contact with its, his two hind legs broke as well as its ass bone.

It screeched in severe pain, "oh no!", I said as I ran close to it feeling pity for the poor thing. Its cry drove me more confused, I felt like going to get help for it. In the state of confusion, I went nuts and with the same chain I flogged its head and it burst open immediately.

What a terrible way to die, this chain has to be the worst weapon on earth, it's way too destructive. I wish I had this when I was with Uncle Zack and Aunt Vera.

Anyways, there's enough meat here to last me days, weeks even, that is until gets bad. I pulled the chain around it, and pulled it back to the cave.

"Help!!!", I heard the female's voice again, seemingly not so far, "what again?", I asked p_ssed. I chose to ignore and kept on pulling my antelope to the cave, "Help, please", I heard the voice cry louder, i found it more difficult to, but went on ignoring, "Mike!!", the voice screamed.

Unable to bear anymore, I quickly loosed the chain and ran to where i heard the crying coming from, "chain kid!! If you can hear me! Please I desperately need your help", the woman cried on as I got closer, now swinging from one tree to the other.

When I got there I saw the wild dogs. Mike's leg was bleeding badly, "you guys again!", i said as I approached with my chain, as soon as they heard the chains, they turned to me, squeaked and began to run away, "not so fast!", I yelled as I let my chain go, resting it hard on the unfortunate last one.

On collision, all its back bone was shattered, it died instantly, while the rest ran away. "Mike!", Judith cried, while Mike groaned in pain, "why did you guys come here?", I asked the crying couple.

"They chased us here!", she replied still crying. "Why on earth are you lying to me!", I said p_ssed, "There's no way a you can out run wild dogs, you either fight them or die!", I said getting more p_ssed as I spoke.

"We have to tell him", Mike said touching Judith's face, "....we were looking for you", Mike added, "why?", I asked harshly, "we are really lost....", he said and before he could complete his sentence, I arrogantly intercepted, "I already told you what to do!", I replied furiously.

"I understand you are angry because of our dishonesty, but please here me out. You asked earlier why I and my wife were sort after by the zombies, isn't it?", he asked, "yeah!", I replied looking at him as he sobbed and bared the pain he felt on his leg.

"Don't worry sweetie, I'll tell him!", Judith said as she turned to me, "I was once one of them!", she replied, "what?", I exclaimed surprised, "yes! I was a zombie! We knew you wouldn't believe or understand, that's why we didn't tell you earlier", she replied as I looked at them.

For a moment no word was uttered apart from Mike gentle groaning, "I do", I replied and they looked at me quite surprised to hear, "My mom is now one of them", I replied in a calm tone.

"Wow! are you sure?", she asked and I looked at her in obvious irritation by her question, "I have encountered her", I replied. "Oh! In that case, she must be something, because they only convert humans with abilities they need, otherwise they eat them up", Judith replied.

In that case there was an ability Judith possessed that the zombies wanted, or rather used. But to be honest, I don't care all I want to know is how she did it.

"So how did you?....you know, come back to being human?", I asked seeing a glimpse of hope for mom about to be unravelled by the woman before me.
