"What is that supposed to mean?", I asked.
"Stop the cab!", He spoke. Only then did I notice that we were already at my house.
"We're home!", He said to me as he got down from the cab to pay the cab driver.
"Mary, we're home!", I said tapping sleeping Mary.
"Uh?!", She exclaimed as she looked around with a confused expression.
"Let's go down!", I said as I opened the cab door.
We all got down and the cab drove off.
Seeing my house, I felt an unexplainable sense of joy, couldn't help but smile as tears rolled down my eyes. I turned to Caleb who had walked some distance towards the house's doorway and couldn't help the mixed feelings.
Without him, I probably wouldn't have been able to see this again, but if he wasn't here, I never would have gone through this in the first place.
Mary remained on my shoulder seeming abnormally weak.
I carried her inside the house and found Caleb next to her mom.
"What you doing?", I asked him. He looked at me and said lifting up a small purse: "returning this!"
Afterwards, he went upstairs. I looked at Mary's mom who seemed sound asleep and then at him walking up, nodded and walked up the stairs with Mary still leaning on me.
……
After laying Mary on the bed, I went straight to the bathroom to get myself washed.
Amidst my shower, I heard mom's car drive in.
I hurriedly got out of the bathroom, quickly cleaned myself up with my towel and rushed downstairs to meet her and explain all that had happened.
On getting there, I found Caleb talking to mom.
"What?! Are they okay?!", She asked sounding alarmed.
"Merylin!", She called out as soon as she saw me. Ran towards me and hugged tight.
She held my face staring and looking thoroughly for abnormalities.
"Are you okay?!", She asked.
"I am fine mom!", I added looking at her.
"Thank you so much Caleb!", She said as she hugged me tightly.
"I wonder what we would have done without you!", She added as she looked at me once again.
Seeing this, I looked at Caleb who stood there with a straight and humble face, looking so innocent. I couldn't help but wonder what Caleb must have told her.
"I have to call dad!", She said as she let go and quickly brought out her phone from her bag.
Caleb at the time, had began to walk back up the stairs. I quickly followed him, pacing up the stairs.
"Caleb!", I called just as he was about to open his door.
He stopped and turned to me, stood there and said nothing, with an expression that said 'get on with what you want...."
"What did you tell mom?", I asked.
"I told her what happened", he replied calmly.
"Including the cause of the kidnap in the first place?", I asked.
"I omitted that. It's not important...", He replied.
"What do you mean it's not important, we could have been killed!", I yelled getting pissed at how casual he took the happenings.
"It won't be important cause I am leaving!", He spoke aloud.
This was the first time Caleb had raised his voice since we met. Hearing his remarks, I felt like one struck by lightning, unable to move or say a word until he walked into the room and short the door behind him.
Yes, he holds a chance of bringing up a potential risk to the family, but I don't want him to go either. He's been rejected way too many times because of what he was born with. He never asked for this!
Why am I acting so selfish, this isn't like Blake, there that was beyond me, Caleb's within my reach, and has so much to offer. Not just to me but the world.
While standing in front of his door, lost in my thought, I heard a car drive in speedingly.
That must be dad!
I turned back and ran down the stairs, to tell him what really happened and what Caleb's planning to do. Only him can help.
"Dad!", I called as I ran down the stairs.
"Mary!", A deep male voice called as he hurriedly turned to me with a happy and expectant expression.
"Mr. Jones!", I exclaimed, surprised to see the tall and muscular Mr. Jones in the living room kneeling next to his wife.
He wore a white long sleeve shirt having a red tie, and his pants well tailored. Aside the bald spots on his head, one can hardly tell how old he really is.
"……She's up stairs...", I said a bit disappointed.
"Please take me to her!", He said.
He followed me up the stairs to my room.
As soon as he saw his daughter, he called her name affectionately and ran towards her.
"Dad…", she said as she opened her eyes slowly.
"Sweetie, I am here! Dad's here?!", He said as he hugged her. He carried her almost effortlessly from the bed in his arms and walked out of the room.
I followed him through the process as he carried Mary to his car and then came back for his wife.
Afterwards, he thanked I and mom and drove to the hospital.
CALEB'S POV:
Flow, Oo Heat, Grow.
These properties exist in only one element.
Having no guardian, this box seems to be the closest thing I have to another answer, or at least a direction.
For as long as I have stayed here, there's only one place I am certain to find this key element and the process required for it's use.
I have to head for Fultain, the Restaurant; there all I need to open the box can be found.
Here's a clue:
A day without me is death; I alone is life but have none.
What am I?
To be continued……
