Resolving to that would be dangerous, for the sake of those children I can't afford to let this woman expose me, but then again, if I really do tell her the truth, who knows when next they would kidnap her daughter or something else would come up that will lead to such a black mail. And besides, how much does she really know about me?
I said nothing as I looked at her, "You aren't saying anything!", she said getting angry.
"Caleb! This is my daughter on the line here!", she further yelled as tears streamed down her cheek, "Guess you really don't like your secret kept!", she added as I continued looking around for other clues.
The letter specified that I was warned. So it's definitely the guy from the other night, seemingly the same person that killed Mr. Patrick.
Cookies?
I said as I bent down to pick the half eaten cookie up.
"What's that?", she asked as I took a sniff.
Merylin was definitely eating this, it is chemically infused, but its smell is not so pronounced. They must have been given this, fainted and dragged away. But how did they willingly eat this? There are no signs of struggle or forceful apprehending. This can only be done by a familiar face... Someone they know well enough to accept cookies from.
Could they have used Merylin's boyfriend? Although Merylin and her boyfriend are not in good terms, but could he have used the box of cookie as means to apologize? The odds of that happening are like 1 to 20, 000.
Besides his foot size is way bigger than the size of the imprint in the sand.
"Hand it over!", Mary's mom commanded as she walked towards me.
Without hesitating I gave it her, the cookie has told enough story already, I need other clues.
Hair?
I walked to it and picked it up, Merylin takes her time to condition and take care of her hair, there's no way it fell naturally, it must have been pulled or played with. She was dragged by her hands and so her hair couldn't have made contact with the floor to conclude that it was pulled due to friction. And besides, if it truly was pulled by friction, there be a lot more than a few strands on the floor. So this was all Merylin!
Why would she play or pull her hair?
One of the reasons females play with their hair is when they see someone they like or find attractive.
Now the odds of it being Merylin's boyfriend is about 1 to 10, 000.
Isn't that Mary's hair?
Even if Merylin's attracted to her dumb boyfriend, I strongly doubt that for Mary.
So who could this stud be?
As I thought a cop car drove and parked in front of the house.
"Officers! Thanks for coming! My daughter was kidnapped", she said as she ran to them and gave them the note.
From the distance, I could clearly see the funny looking cops.
One fat one, and the other, extra lanky, on their name tags, was written, "Burrows" and "Billy" respectively.
"Who's Caleb?", Burrows, the fat cop, asked after reading the note.
Without hesitation, Merylin's mom threw a finger at me and blurted out: "him!'"
They walked up to where I was near the house.
"Are you Caleb?", Burrows asked.
"Yes", I replied.
"What do you know about the kidnapping?", He asked.
"Nothing", I replied.
"This letter begs the differ!", He said.
"It says here that you were warned, could you throw more light on that?", He asked.
I can't let the cops get involved in this matter, even if they are able to find Merylin and the sick bastard who did this, it will only put me under the limelight of this town's cops. I have to play with their heads a bit, and teach this woman a lesson for going back on her words and threatening me.
I looked at him, chuckled a bit and said: "Do you really believe that crazy woman?"
On hearing this, they looked at themselves puzzled.
"Can't you see that she's crazy, she's promised to prank some cops and send me to jail! And right now, she's on drugs", I replied.
They remained quiet for a while, looked at themselves and then Burrows asked, "what about the letter?"
"She wrote it herself and called you guys", I replied.
He hummed and said, "she doesn't sound like she's joking or on drugs"
"Why don't you take her for a check up and see", I replied.
They immediately became confused as they stared at Mrs. Jones obviously contemplating if I was right or wrong.
As they did that, I quickly bent down to pick the second cookie, seemingly the one Mary was eating. With my hands, I made powder out of it.
As I paid more attention to the direction the wind was blowing towards.
"Officers, what are you guys waiting for?", Mrs. Jones asked as she walked towards us paranoid.
Before the cops could say a word, I interupted them saying, "why don't you tell them what really happened Mrs Jones?"
"What?! What are you saying? You led to my daughter's kidnap!", She said furiously.
The cops continued staring at her like a mad woman, this made her more mad.
She held unto my shirt and yelled, "You bastard! I told you I was going to expose you if you don't cooperate, now you are making matters worse!"
She turned to them and blurted out in anger: "this kid is not ordinary, he has powers!"
Immediately her voice fell, the officers had an immediate change in their expression.
It was obvious in their faces that I had won their hearts, but to conclude my win I need to do one more thing.
I tossed the powdered cookie in front of her immediately I noticed the wind blowing to her direction.
She inhaled inadvantently and coughed faintly and continued talking, "he can control minds!"
"Sure he can!", They both said and began to laugh.
"What?! You don't believe me?", She added.
"Sure we do!", they replied laughing harder as Burrows winked at me.
"No! He's controlling your minds isn't he?", She said and turned to me.
"You bastard!! What have you done?", She asked me as I remained expressionless.
"Brains!", The cops began to joke around and laugh some more.
"This is so funny, it's not everyday we see a woman act this real on drugs!", Billy said to Burrows.
"I am not on drugs, I am perfectly..", before she could complete her sentence she fainted.
Seems the effect of the cookie had kicked in.
Before she got to the ground, I quickly grabbed her. If she falls like that, she would have her head colliding against the pavement, that would definitely lead to something else. All I want is for her to seem crazy, not actually go crazy.
I totally understand her though, she's a mother who despirately wants to see her daughter, that makes her daughter a strong weakness to her, I can't have her as an ally.
"Good thing we were smart enough to know that she was on drugs", Burrows said to Billy and laughed hard.
"Yeah, we really are smart!", Billy replied smiling and looking at her.
Dumb fools!
"We should detain her for the false call and abusing illegal substance!", they said.
"That wouldn't be necessary. She's a friend to my mom and has seemingly being going through alot, I'll let my mom handle it!", I replied indifferently.
"It's our job", Billy said with a frown.
This guys are a millimeter away from over staying their welcome.
I looked at Billy straight in the eyes and said coldly, "Mr. Billy, right?"
He was stunned for a short while, then looked at his name tag.
"Is the police department aware that you take ciggerates on duty?", I asked and he became dumbfounded.
"What do you think would happen, if you were reported to by a teenager?", I further asked.
He kept quiet as he heart began to race.
"Are you threatening us kid?!", Burrows added.
I looked at their car and I found more things to incriminate them with.
"Mr. Burrows, stopping for food during work hours, I wonder what your department's going to do when they check how often you check in and out of the kempskiz", I replied.
And he too became quiet.
"I'll let you guys go, if you agree to just this simple favour for me, let my mom's friend go. I'll take care of her", I added coldly.
They kept quiet for a while and looked at me with fear in their eyes.
"You know you won't only loose your jobs, but might end up being arrested", I added to add more weigth to their already heavy hearts.
"This never happened!", Burrows said and pulled Billy away, as they hastenly walked to their car.
After they left, I carried miss Jones inside our house and laid her on the couch.
I couldn't help but stare at her b__bs.
But there really isn't the time to admire them, I have to go find Merylin and Mary before the word of their missing gets out. How many people would I be able to fool that Mrs. Jones is crazy then?
To be continued....
