Right before me, she opened her eyes, being calm and closer to her, I could see her light brown eyes, a color like that of honey, and her hair, wet, scattered and long, with sand on it.
She struggled to look at me, squinting because of the sun's harsh rays, she choicelessly turned away, "snake!", she screamed again and moved back on seeing Medusa, "it's okay, it won't hurt you", I said to her, "get away from her", June yelled as he ran towards me.
His foot ended up in my hand, a counter to his kick, I held it tightly, looking at him in the eyes as he groaned in pain, "Derick!", Mrs Claire yelled, so I pushed his leg back and he fell and landed on the floor, face to the sand, "June!", April said as she stood up and ran to where he was, and Medusa who noticed all of this was close and ready to strike, but I put a hand up telling her not to.
After he got up, Mrs Claire continued apologizing on I and Medusa's behalf, I see no reason why she did that, it's not like I did anything wrong. "Where's your dad?", Mrs Claire asked as herself and April try to hit sand off June, "he's...he's dead!", June said as April broke into tears, "oh!", Mrs Claire exclaimed shocked, but didn't cry like the last time, "he died some days back", June added, "I am so sorry", Mrs Claire said as she patted him on the back, "so where do you guys live?", Mrs Claire asked, "..we lived in our dad's SUV, one he collected during the invasion", June explained, "where's it now?", Mrs Claire asked on, "it's quite some distance away from here, we ran out of petrol and decided to walk", he explained, "where to?", she questioned, "we heard this broadcast on the radio the other day, saying there's life along the river, that we should follow it till we see a different coloration in the water", he explained, "we heard that too", she added, "that's where we are heading to as well", Mrs Claire explained to them, "so we could go together!", April said abruptly after wiping off her tears, "yeah!", Mrs Claire replied with almost the same enthusiasm as April. It was obvious that I and June weren't pleased with the idea, but didn't seem to have much of a choice.
We commenced with the journey. I, from time to time stared at April who went non stop asking Mrs Claire questions, June on the other hand held his gun firmly and was looking around vigilantly as though he was told the zombies were going to ambush him very soon, "stop!", I said and walked forward, ahead of the group, "what's your problem?", June asked, "shhhh", Mrs Claire hushed as I slowly brought out my bow.
"Run!", I yelled, noticing the sudden change in atmosphere, the birds weren't sing, the animals weren't making their usual sounds, in other words, life was quiet; a sure signs that the monsters were coming, and from how quiet it is, I estimate a large number of them heading our direction, there's no way we can fight them all.
After yelling run, there's was a brief moment of hesitation, only Medusa and Mrs Claire had made moves, June and April looked at themselves and then back at me obviously doubtful, "you guys don't believe me!", I said p_ssed as they stared at me, "what are you guys waiting for, do what he says!", Mrs Claire adviced, and April who was about obeying was held by June, "we have to keep moving, the night isn't going to wait for us", he replied, "I don't have time for this. Mrs Claire get on Medusa!", I commanded and was about running when Mrs Claire held my hand, "Derick please, we can't leave them here", she said, "but he doesn't believe me!!!", I said really p_ssed, "arrrghhhhh!!!", we soon began to hear their growls as they got closer, "the cave boy ain't lying!", he said aloud as he began to run still holding April's hand.
Mrs Claire quickly got on Medusa's back and we all began to run, we had wasted too much time already the zombies were already out and fast approaching, seeing us only excited their speed, at this rate we can't out run them. "The trees!!", I yelled, Medusa was closest to the tree, she immediately made curves allowing Mrs Claire to go up. On seeing Mrs Claire get on the tree, April too wanted to follow her but was too scared to touch Medusa, "it wont hurt you April", Mrs Claire said, "I can't!", she cried as she walked back to June, "come on April, we dont have a choice", June adviced, the zombies were just some seconds away from us, "April close your eyes!", I said aloud and she did, "Medusa pick her up!!", I commanded, and Medusa obeyed.
Mrs Claire, April were now on the tree, clibing a tree was never hard for Medusa, so while I waited, I turned to the herd of zombies running towards us; even if none had a metal plated head, it will still be impossible to kill them all on our own, , especially at the speed they were coming.
I turned back around and realised that they were all up in the tree, except June, "you dumb snake, come back down here", June said aloud, I ignored running towards the tree, jumped and pushed my knife on the tree, it entered giving me a decent grip on it and without wasting even a second I made another jump and was with them on the branch, "June!", April and Mrs Claire chorused aloud, "get me up!!", he screamed in fear like a child, "Derick please!", April begged now crying.
I looked at her and then Mrs Claire who was also begging then down at June, the zombies were just about 15 feets away from him, "Medusa!", Mrs Claire yelled, Medusa who did not like June ignored. "Medusa!, hold on to me", I said and it obeyed, I immediately jumped off the tree, with Medusa's tail wrapped around my leg I was able to pull June up.
We were all on the tree and watched as the zombies went around the tree in circles. They soon began to hit it.
"Why did your dumb snake refuse to pull me up like it did grandma and my sister?", June questioned out of no where, "if I were alone, I'll honestly let you die!", I said really p_ssed at him, "Derick!", Mrs Claire said aloud, "can't you see what he caused, if we ran at time I asked us to, they wouldn't have known where we were!", I said aloud as the number of zombies beneath us multiplied, so much so that the tree began to shake.
At this rate the tree is going to fall, "so what do we do?", April said panicking, "I'll simply just light them up with my baby here", June said about to shoot down, "they are way too many for you to kill with such a method", I adviced holding his gun, "a shot, takes out about 6", He said still acting stubborn, "can't you think!!", I said p_ssed, an anger that was pushing me to push him down, "how many bullets do you have? look at them!!", I said pointing down at them, he looked at them and then at his gun and kept quiet, "we need to create a space around ourselves!", I said looking around, "why?", June asked trying to figure out what I was looking at, "we have to go down", I said, "what!", June exclaimed, "yes! It's the only way we can save ourselves and the vulnerable", I said referring to Mrs Claire and April, "we would take their attention off the tree, and with a melee weapon whose ammo is infinite or rather based on will", I explained to June and Mrs Claire broke into tears, "please don't cry Mrs Claire, I am going to get you out of this. I promise", I said to her as the tears in her eyes multiplied, "I am not afraid of dying, I am just so proud of you", she said with a smile.
I turned to June, "do you have any melee weapon?", I asked, "my bat got broken in one of their heads", he explained, "here!", I said handing him my cutlass, "I can't use this", he replied looking at me, "what do you mean you can't use this", I said looking at him with fear in his eyes, "let me have your bow instead", he requested, "you can't use a cutlass, but can use a bow", I said a bit puzzled, "I don't like going close to these guy, I prefer to attack from a distance", he explained, "fine!", I said p_ssed and gave him my bow, "in any case, I need you to clear the path for I and Medusa's landing with your gun", I said to him, "piece of cake", he said and reloaded his gun.
One fire from this thing was more effective than 6 of my arrows, he shot around us several times and a number of them were killed, about 1/4 of the entire population, he tried firing again but nothing came out of his gun, "I guess you are out of ammo!", I said prepared to jump, "yeah", he replied setting up the bow, "let's go Medusa before they regroup", I said and jumped down with my cutlass and knife.
Once I and Medusa landed, all attention was on us and as planned and we began to fight, I swung my cutlass in any direction I could, killing the most I could and receiving a few minor hits here and there, June assisted with the bow which he was actually quite good at, while Mrs Claire and April acted like referees, letting us know who was about to attack and from where. The fight in general wasn't an easy one, but it was made easy because of these things.
In minutes we had taken out 3/4 of the entire population of zombies, including ones with metal plated heads, which I had found an easy way of killing, other than letting Medusa swallow. Unlike the rest, the ones with metal plated head cannot be killed with one or even 12 strikes to the head, the only way of killing these ones is through their neck; my cutlass can't go through from their necks to their head; what does is my knife or an arrow.
With 4/5 of their population gone, June decided to come down with his gun, using it like a bat, hitting off the heads of which ever zombie came his way, and in no time we were almost through; dead zombies every where, I and Medusa were bleeding badly. I was so injured, so much so I had blood running down my face like sweat, but unlike sweat it was thick and found a way to partially blur my vision, after delivering the final blow to the last one, I knelt down and closed my eyes.
When I woke up, it was night, I was in a room, one whose roof and walls were white, with the fire giving lights to all corners of the room, "where are we?", I asked as I sat up, "it's okay dear, you are safe", Mrs Claire said, "where's Medusa?", I asked immediately after looking around and not seeing her, "she's outside", she replied and I rested my head back down, "are you okay?", April said coming close with a fruit in hand, seemingly plucked from the tree they were on.
She had worn a totally different outfit, which made it more difficult for me to take my eyes off her, I really do not understand, nor can I explain how I feel when she's close to me, "I am fine", I replied as I collected the fruit she offered me, "you guys were amazing", she complimented, "Where's your brother?", I asked, "he went out to get some more wood and herbs", she replied with a bit of worry in her voice, I turned to Mrs Claire and saw same expression on her face, "how long has it been now?", I asked and they refused to say a word as they looked out the door, "April!", I called knowing it'll be easier for her to cave, "...quite a long time now", she replied, I struggled to pick myself up but couldn't, my arms, shoulders and waist hurts terribly, "don't worry, Derick he'll be back!", Mrs Claire assured.
"Where are you from?", April broke the silence, I said nothing not knowing what to reply as I stared at her face, "okay, umm... what's your favourite color?", she asked, I really haven't seen any reason to like a color more than another, so I said nothing still. "I guess you don't have a favourite color either", she said, "mine is skyblue", she added hold up the shoulder part of her gown and I said nothing as I continued staring at her. She looked around seemingly looking for something else to say, "arrrhhhhh!!!", we heard someone scream aloud outside, "June!", April said aloud as she ran outside.
